Querétaro is the 6th smallest state in Mexico, occupies 0.6% of the country and its area is about 11,978 km2. It has 18 municipalities and the 23rd in population with 1'598, 139 inhabitants, 66% of which are concentrated in the two major cities: San Juan del Río (208,000) and Santiago de Querétaro (918.100), whose metropolitan area is the 11th largest in the country.
The remaining 34% of the population lives in rural communities. 23,363 inhabitants speak an indigenous language, the most common being the Otomi. Amealco and Tolimán municipalities are the main localities where this language is spoken.
9% of Queretaro is engaged in agriculture, 32% in industry and 60% in service companies. It has more than 20 industrial parks, where is the outstanding park.
